THE IVY HOUR BACKSTORY
A MODERN FABLE
It started with Caroline Rhodes. People say The Ivy Hour began sometime around 1906 on the weathered seaside porch of Stonebridge Cottage, tucked along the New England coast where the air smelled like salt and cedar and the ivy practically had a personality of its own.
The cottage belonged to Caroline Rhodes—a former fashion publicist turned interior curator who, at fifty-two, did something quietly radical for her time: she stepped away from the noise.
After years spent in hurried rooms and polished conversations, Caroline wanted a slower rhythm. A truer one. She traded deadlines for garden paths. Velvet banquettes for worn linen chairs. Industry parties for candlelight and sea air.
Stonebridge Cottage became her sanctuary—aged brick, climbing ivy, stone-lined paths winding toward the water. And when a fire destroyed the original home, Caroline rebuilt it with even greater intention.
That’s when The Ivy Hour was born.
Every evening at precisely five o’clock, Caroline stopped.
No appointments.
No obligations.
No rushing ahead.
Just one sacred hour devoted to being still.
Some evenings looked like Scripture and prayer. Others looked like soft jazz drifting through open windows, a half-read novel resting in her lap, or thoughts poured into a linen-bound journal. In winter, she cradled a mug of rich, creamed coffee. In summer, a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc or a lemon herbal spritz caught the golden light.
Nothing extravagant.
Just deeply intentional.
And somehow, that made it feel luxurious.
Over time, close friends began to notice the ritual. Writers, designers, artists, old souls, thoughtful wanderers—they’d arrive at her door asking the same question: “Are we in time for The Ivy Hour?”
And usually, they were.
What began as Caroline’s private exhale slowly became something more: a gathering place for meaningful conversation, heartfelt laughter, thoughtful reflection, and the kind of connection people rarely make when they’re hurrying.
Caroline came to believe true luxury was never about having more.
It was about holding time differently.
Keeping moments well.
Listening fully.
Lingering longer.
Practicing what she called the art of the elegant pause.
***
Then came Charlotte McKeone.
After Caroline passed in 1937, Stonebridge Cottage was inherited by her spirited niece Charlotte—a golfer, nature lover, and modern woman long before the phrase existed.
Charlotte brought a fresh energy to The Ivy Hour tradition. She loved movement and adventure, but she also understood the quiet ache of a too-busy world. She knew even the most capable women needed margin. Space to breathe. Space to think.
Wrapped in a sherpa blanket or wearing her favorite collegiate sweatshirt after a long afternoon outdoors, Charlotte continued gathering trusted friends onto the wide wraparound porch for evenings of slow conversation and shared reflection.
The ritual endured because it answered something timeless in people:
the longing to feel grounded again.
***
Then along came "B." n 1978, Stonebridge Cottage passed to Charlotte’s granddaughter, affectionately known simply as “B.”
By then, life had softened around the edges.
As a semi-retired pastor, B found herself entering a quieter season—one with fewer obligations and more room to notice things. One morning, while sorting through old family papers and stories, she rediscovered the legend of The Ivy Hour.
And something in her heart stirred.
The idea felt almost rebellious now:
an hour with no agenda.
No rushing.
No performance.
No endless checklist.
Just stillness. So she tried it.
Day after day, week after week, B practiced the elegant pause for herself—reading Scripture, talking with the Lord, reflecting quietly, learning again how to abide instead of strive.
And after a year of living it, she knew something important:
This kind of slowing down was never meant to be kept alone. So she invited a few friends over.
Then a few more.
Women in similar seasons of life gathered together each week to talk honestly, laugh deeply, wrestle gently with faith, motherhood, aging, gratitude, books, music, podcasts, purpose, and the beautiful uncertainty of what comes next.
No one needed to impress anyone.
That was the magic.
The conversations became sacred in the ordinary way real life often is.
***
Now, it's your turn. Nearly 120 years after its beginning, the Ivy Hour lives on through you.
A quiet invitation in a noisy world.
A reminder that rest is holy.
That conversation matters.
That beauty and faith and friendship still belong at the center of a well-lived life.
The Ivy Hour is an elegant pause to reflect, realign, reconnect, and rest. Journal with a cup of coffee and a Bible. Listen to music in a warm sweatshirt with a comforting glass of wine.
But perhaps the loveliest part of The Ivy Hour is this:
It was never meant to belong to just one porch. Or one family. Or one generation.
The Ivy Hour is perfect for you to enjoy alone - or to share with others. Your believing friends will love the camaraderie and your non-religious friends will find peace.
Think of it as a book club, without the book.
Heartfelt journaling. Conversations between trusted friends.
Table to table.
Porch to porch.
Heart to heart.
Maybe your Ivy Hour looks like candles and journals with a small circle of women gathered around your kitchen island. Maybe it’s coffee on the back patio before the rest of the house wakes up. Maybe it’s a monthly dinner club, a Bible study, a walk with a trusted friend, or simply one sacred hour where phones are put away and souls get to breathe again.
There are no rules.
No perfect aesthetic required.
No membership card.
No pressure to perform.
Only an invitation:
To slow down.
To linger longer.
To gather intentionally.
To listen carefully.
To laugh deeply.
To make space for what matters most.
And maybe most beautifully of all, The Ivy Hour creates room for the kinds of conversations people are secretly longing to have—the honest ones. The meaningful ones. The “how are you really doing?” ones.
Start your own Ivy Hour.
Invite a friend.
Light the candle.
Pour the coffee.
Ask the meaningful question.
Stay a little longer than planned.
Because in a world constantly asking us to hurry, The Ivy Hour gently reminds us that some of life’s most beautiful moments happen when we choose not to.
And perhaps, years from now, someone will tell the story of how your Ivy Hour began, too.
